dab Arts have worked on many projects, both large and small, with many groups of people. Our artists are all highly skilled individuals who work in a variety of settings ranging from individual professional practice to community and mainstream education.
    2006
    The Incident
dab Arts performed The Incident, a script by Christine Harmar-Brown from devising sessions with the young people of the youth theatre. Dealing with issues of community bullying and exclusion, it tracks the fallout from 'the incident' on a group of young people in an urban environment.

We are trying 'theatre in the round', literally, with a roundabout at the centre of the arena. The time is now......with a few surprises. It is part musical with live and recorded accompaniment.

Directed by Laura Dunton Clarke

Performed at the Young Minds Conference in London with Julian Clary, and at venues in East and West Sussex. The drama has evolved with new members of the cast.     Guerrilla Art
Based on the graffitists Banksy and ‘I like Drawing’ (see www.picturesonwalls.com), we start with a giant paper wall and marker pens, and proceed to develop the work onto T shirts and canvases over the four sessions. The last day is devoted to showcasing and documenting the work. We’re charging a fiver, which includes all materials, T shirts, canvases and refreshments (but don’t let this stop you coming, have a quiet word). Dave Reading, graphics designer, who’s done loads of T shirts you see on TV and Judy Dewsbery, painter/ex fashion designer are heading up the project with Nikki Joy, video maker.
Booking essential as there are only 12 places. (01424) 431305 or judy@dabarts.com

    Wave
2001-4

dab Arts worked with the people of Hastings & St.Leonards to create an exciting project in Hastings Station booking hall.

The theme was “wave” and we asked local people for ideas in the form of words, or images, or both. They sent us their ideas on the back of specially produced postcards, and posted them in postboxes made by our artists.
More than five hundred people responded. Some of the best postcards
were awarded prizes by ConnexSE, while others were used as inspiration
for twelve huge banners hung from the station ceiling.

Meanwhile various community groups participated in our workshops to make five large wall hangings. Finally two semi circular pieces were made to fit the large station windows, and the installation was complete and ready for a special launch event over the Easter holiday 2002, which included drumming, and an exhibition of all the postcards.

A short video was made which included the postcard images and poems and writing, set to music. The station was so transformed that we were asked to leave the installation there indefinitely!

    New Millennium Micro Village

Sunday 14th September, Wellington Place (outside Woolworths) Our Artist-led street theatre took a light look at regeneration in Hastings, with input from young people's 'Do it' workshops which were held during the summer.

The project explored innovative ways of engaging the public in a consultation process which was both entertaining and amusing while providing creative ideas for the future regeneration of Hastings.

The Lion and the Unicorn
2002

Funded by Awards for All, this project celebrated the statues of a Lion and a Unicorn which are at either end of Robertson Terrace, near the seaside entrance to Debenhams in Hastings. Different artists will explore the theme using different art forms.

An exhibition of the pieces was held at the Pine Gallery in October 2002 and was seen again in different locations around Hastings Town Centre as part of an "I Spy" trail.

Children from four local primary schools took part, guided by a specially commissioned " I Spy" style book designed and illustrated by Hastings based artist Ed Boxall.

The Education Action Zone sponsored follow - up workshops in schools, which enabled dab artists to develop ideas with the children, based on their responses to the trail.

    Ballroom
2002

Part of a pilot project initiated by the De la Warr Pavilion, in association with South East Arts “Creativity of Older People Scheme” dab worked with a group of over fifties, on the theme of ballroom. The work was very much a collaboration between the group members and the artists with ideas drawn from the experiences and images surrounding the Ballroom theme.

During a series of four two hour workshops, the group made a small installation which was exhibited at the De La Warr Pavilion in June 2002. It is hoped that this may develop into a larger project this year.

    White Spirit
2002

Using the White Exhibition at the De la Warr Pavilion as its starting point,
dab Arts worked with students from Bexhill High School to develop work based on the students response to the work in the Exhibition.

    Punchline
2001

Using a Punch and Judy style booth as their starting point, groups of local children and adults were given a pre-constructed booth and a blank calico cover and invited to put their own contemporary slant on this traditional seaside attraction. Some made giant puppets, some made the booths come alive with writhing snakes and jungle creatures, while poets pinned poems on theirs!
    Millenium Fishermans Arch
2000

A celebratory arch commissioned by the Millennium Lottery Fund as a development of the traditional arches once built by the fishing community. Workshops with children in situ and with adults making flags to represent each fishing boat.
